What is a Lawyer
A lawyer, according to Black’s Law Dictionary, is « a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person who is practicing law. »In most countries, particularly civil law countries, there has been a tradition of giving many legal tasks to a variety of civil law notaries, clerks, and scriveners.
Terminology
In practice, legal jurisdictions exercise their right to determine who is recognised as being a lawyer; as a result, the meaning of the term « lawyer » may vary from place to place. An attorney at law (or attorney-at-law) in the United States is a practitioner in a court of law who is legally qualified to prosecute and defend actions in such court on the retainer of clients.
